The holiday season brings a lot of things we love — glowing trees, tacky sweaters, endless amounts of cookies —…
Getting to Know iU: Mike Karsch
There are some people who shy away from attention. Then there are those who walk up to your desk and say “hey what’s up with that Employee Spotlight thing, when can I do it?”
World, meet Mike Karsch: Project Manager, office DJ, meme scholar, and all-around champion of getting s*** done.
What do you do here? I make sure we get stuff done well, done right, done on time, and done under budget.
How long have you worked here? About two years. I was initially contracted as the Marketing Coordinator for TERMINUS, and did such a
terrible amazing job that IU brought me on full-time after that (first as an Account Manager, then as a Project Manager).
What did you do before this? I was an Account Manager for The NFHS Network, a streaming platform for High School sports. I worked with over 400 schools around the country, training them on the ins-and-outs of live sports production and how to successfully market their broadcast programs.
Cats or dogs? The world’s worst dog is still better than the world’s greatest cat. Don’t @ me.
What’s your favorite aspect of your job? Working on projects for amazing clients (OshKosh, Tribeca Film Festival, PGA, Atlanta Falcons, CARE, among many more) with even more amazing people (Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Big Boi, David Roemer).
What would you do if you won the lottery? Run like hell.
What career (other than this one) would you like to try? I would love to be an A&R Scout for a record label, if those were still a thing….or an NBA player, if I was three inches taller and significantly more coordinated.
What’s your guilty pleasure TV show? Catfish. It’s incredible what secrets people can hide in the age of information and zero privacy. Have you seen the one where BOTH people were catfishing each other without realizing they had actually dated a decade before?!? Or the one where the guy thought he was in a relationship with Katy Perry? Hold on, let me get my drink….
If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be? Chimpanzee. They’re goofy, fun-loving, and smart, but fiercely loyal to the point where they aggressively defend their clan from any potential threat. I feel that on a spiritual level.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d like to grow up to be Diddy. Anyone know how to make that happen, or if he’s accepting apprentices?
What was your nickname in high school? Screech. I had a very strong resemblance to the Saved By The Bell character, to the point where random people on the street (or at sporting events, water parks, airplanes, etc) would come talk to me about it. (Confession: I have NEVER watched the show due to the trauma this caused).
What is one thing that no one in the office knows about you? I was in the music video for Young Jeezy’s “My President Is Black”… keep an eye out for the Screech look-alike.
What are you working on in your free time? I recently started The 404 Project, a music collective with the goal of helping “unknown” local music talent expand their fan bases, both in ATL and beyond. Our first compilation, The 404 Project Vol. 1, drops soon!
