Without using the words in your job title, describe what you do at Ideas United?
I organize tasks and people.
How did you wind up here?
When I decided to move back to Atlanta, I reached out to friends who seemed to like where they worked. Vikas and Evan seemed to love their jobs, so I reached out. I got super lucky that it just so happened to be when iU was hiring Project Managers and a whole lot of other people at the time.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love getting to work with non-profits and do work that helps students find their voice.
What’s the biggest struggle in your role? How can iU and your colleagues help?
Getting everyone to meet their deadlines and fixing the unexpected problems that arise. My colleagues always help by pitching in with solutions or staying late to get the work done on time.
What’s your favorite iU related memory or story?
I loved watching the young women we took to Los Angeles pitch to ABC! It was so great to watch them really shine and wow the executives there.
What is the most fulfilling part of your role here?
Helping non-profit companies raise money is for sure #1. I also really enjoy that feeling when we do good work and our partners are really satisfied.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future of the industry we work in (content creation/ TV & Film production)?
Well if we’re talking about film, there was a time when executives listened more to creatives when it came to choosing content in the industry. It’s not like that anymore — the financial decision-makers have so much input into scripts, especially, but also other creative decisions. A lot of it has to do with what will sell abroad, so content quality has really taken a nosedive. I’d love to see that change back.
What are you passionate about?
Travel, podcasts, dogs, and musicals.
Travel: I think it’s so important to expand your horizons. It makes you think differently, opens your mind, exposes you to ideas you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. Plus it’s the only time I really feel like I’m living.
Podcasts: I’m a lifelong learner and there’s no easier and quicker way to learn about the world than by listening to podcasts. You can find good ones on any topic you’re interested in and again be exposed to ideas you wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. PLUS you can listen to them while you do all kinds of things so…. a multitasker’s dream.
Dogs: They are better than us, just pure goodness. How can you not love them? #adoptdontshop
Musicals: I don’t know what else to say except that I’m just so impressed by all of the talent that comes together to make them happen. Plus, they bring pure joy.
Who, or what, inspires you?
Lin Manuel Miranda, Rachel Bloom, and Laura Richards.
I love how Lin Manuel Miranda and Rachel Bloom are making a career by being unapologetically themselves. They bring everything they are to their work and it resonates with people because of that. Plus they are both word magicians.
Laura Richards is just a badass. She’s former New Scotland Yard. She started a company, Paladin National Stalking Advocacy Service, that helps victims in the UK. She was instrumental in getting stalking and coercive control laws passed in the UK and she’s an unapologetic women and victim’s rights advocate.
Who is your favorite social media account to follow, and why?
Black Jaguar White Tiger’s Instagram — they save large animals from people who tried to keep them as pets or zoos and their photos/videos are so cute!
